Tarragona, World Heritage Site

Tarragona, formerly known as Tarraco, was one of the main cities of the Iberian Peninsula during the time of the Roman Empire. In 2000, UNESCO declared the archaeological site formed by fourteen different places belonging to the ruins of the Roman Tarraco a World Heritage Site. With a typically Mediterranean climate and gastronomy, together with its history and important heritage, Tarragona is a city that is definitely worth visiting.

Arrival by your own means in Tarragona. Dinner on your own. Accommodation in Tarragona in a double room in a 4 * hotel.

Roman Tarragona, Modernist Reus, the fishing village of Cambrils

Not far from the Roman Tarragona, there are two cities that undoubtedly deserve to be known: Reus and Cambrils.

In the first place is Reus, the capital of Baix Camp, known for being the hometown of the famous modernist architect Antonio Gaudí, although there is no building in the city that bears his signature. Founded during the Christian Reconquest in 1154, Reus promptly grew during the 18th century, becoming the second city in Catalonia in number of inhabitants, thanks to the development of the textile and liquor trade. The importance of Reus at this time explains in a certain way the progressive arrival of the bourgeoisie, as reflected in the many modernist buildings that were built in the city between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today you can enjoy the Modernism Route, which includes almost 30 places of interest related to modernist architecture, but also the Gaudí Route, which incorporates different buildings linked to the history of the famous modernist architect. Finally, you can also enjoy the Vermouth Route to learn more details about the tradition of this liquor in the city of Reus.

For the lovers of the sea and gastronomy, it is recommended not to miss the city of Cambrils. With origins dating back to prehistoric times, Cambrils became more important during Roman times, thanks to its proximity to ancient Tarraco and the Via Augusta. Known as the Gastronomic Capital of the Costa Dorada, this port town has a long seafaring tradition that is fully reflected in its culinary tradition. With more than 150 restaurants, including two with Michelin Star, Cambrils is the ideal destination for people who want to know a region through its gastronomy.

After having breakfast at your hotel, you have the day off to discover the heritage, architectural and gastronomic jewels of Tarragonès and Baix Camp. Accommodation in Tarragona in a double room in a 4 * Hotel.

The Ebro Delta and Tortosa, the City of the three Cultures

Let's go to the south of the province of Tarragona to discover the Ebro Delta and the city of Tortosa.

The Ebro Delta, with an area of about 300 km2, is the largest aquatic habitat in Catalonia. Constituted a Natural Park since 1983, it offers a good number of different environments that make easy the coexistence of a very diverse fauna and flora and that are part of its natural landscape. This extension, together with the combination of calm waters and more rough waters, make it an ideal place for practicing water sports with different levels of difficulty, but also to enjoy unique experiences in the middle of the rice fields to (re)discover the ancestral survival techniques in the Ebro Delta or admire the many species of birds that live there. In addition to offering unique landscapes that evolve throughout the year, the Ebro Delta has its own gastronomy and culinary tradition that uses local products from different parts of the Ebro Lands. Among its ingredients, Km.0, we find rice from local rice fields, mussels and oysters grown in the bays of Fangar and Alfaques, but also more typical products such as blue crab, eel or sea nettles that delight the palates of lovers of good food.

As for Tortosa, it is the capital of the Baix Ebre region. It is the episcopal seat and constitutes an important agricultural, commercial and industrial center. Touristically, it is known as the City of the Three Cultures, since in addition to knowing that since the 6th century BC the city had been continuously populated by Iberians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims given its strategic point (located on a hill, next to the river and close to the mouth), after the Christian conquest in 1148 by Ramon Berenguer IV, Both the Saracen community and the Jewish community that were established there were allowed to remain in the city, thus coexisting the three cultures. This coexistence has marked the city for centuries and its traces are still visible in the current city.

Breakfast at your hotel. Free day to discover the Ebro Delta and Tortosa at your own pace. Possibility of including optional activities and experiences throughout the day. Accommodation in Tortosa in a 4 * hotel.

Terra Alta and Ribera d'Ebre

La Terra Alta  has a name that comes from its detached location and higher above sea level than its neighbors in Baix Ebre and Ribera d'Ebre. It is a true rural paradise that offers a great variety of landscapes. The Terra Alta also has of a Denomination of Origin of wines (DO Terra Alta). The production of white wine predominates, made with white Grenache and Macabeo, but rosé and red wines are also made, mainly with cariñena, red and "peluda" Grenache. With ancient olive trees, vineyards and fields of almond trees, Terra Alta offers unique rural landscapes far from crowds. A paradise to discover by bicycle, traveling the Via Verde de la Val de Zafán or through the many active tourism proposals that exist in the area. La Terra Alta brings together several towns of great interest, such as Batea or Horta de Sant Joan with their medieval streets, or Gandesa and Pinell de Brai with their modernist Wine Cathedrals.

Returning to the banks of the river Ebro, we enter the Ribera d'Ebre to discover the charming town of Miravet and its Templar castle that offers spectacular panoramic views of this area of the Ebro Lands. Considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Tarragona province, Miravet has a medieval historical center ideal to lose yourself in its small streets, although some of its buildings are still in ruins today as a result of the Spanish Civil War. Miravet also has its famous boat crossing, the last river ferry that allows you to cross the Ebro from Miravet to the other shore. Made up of two lutes, this boat attached to two cables works without a motor using only the force of the water and the skill of the boatman. Nature fans can continue to enjoy the Ribera d'Ebre by heading to the Sebes Natural Reserve, which, together with the Meander de Flix, gather an area of free water, river islands and riverside forests covering an area of more than 250 hectares. History lovers can visit the Iberian Village of Castellet de Banyoles, located in the municipality of Tivissa. The Ribera de Ebro is a territory that was built in synergy with the Ebro river and the different surrounding mountain ranges, a fact that is reflected in its landscapes modeled by dry stone margins where olive trees, almond trees and other fruit trees are mostly grown.

Breakfast at your hotel. Free day to discover Terra Alta and Ribera de Ebro at your own pace. Possibility of including optional activities and experiences throughout the day. Accommodation in Falset in a 4 * hotel.

Priorat wine and villages

El Priorat owes its name to the first Carthusian monastery built in the Iberian Peninsula. Monks of the Carthusian order arrived in this territory in the 12th century thanks to a concession from Alfonso I. The reason was to build a monastery in a unique place, protected by the Sierra de Montsant. A place where a shepherd had dreamed that angels ascended to heaven by a ladder supported by the trunk of a pine tree. Hence the name of the monastery, the Carthusian monastery of “Scala Dei”. For seven centuries and with the purpose of populating an area that had just been conquered, the monks who came from Provence promoted the development of this territory, spreading the cultivation of the vineyards. The Prior was the one who controlled the territory. Subsequent donations and purchases made the Cathusian monastery a great feudal lordship. Its domains included the historic Priory, which coincides with the territory wine Qualified Designation of Origin Priorat (DOCP). Today you can visit the remains of what was the majestic Escaladei monastery, where the exterior of three of its cloisters, the refectory, the church and a cell of an ancient monk reproduced with all accuracy are shown. For wine lovers, Priorat is a region that cannot be ignored. Bringing together in its territory two different DOs of wines with their own identity (DO Montsant and DOC Priorat), Priorat offers numerous wine tourism options with winery tours, a 4x4 vineyards tours and different wine tastings and wine pairings.

Finally, you cannot visit the Priorat without strolling through the beautiful village of Siurana, one of the best viewpoints in Spain. This small village formed by stone houses and cobbled streets, was the last stronghold of the reconquest in Catalonia, thanks to its unique location with difficult access. Today Siurana is also worldwide  known by climbers for its legendary cliffs.

Breakfast at your hotel. Free day to discover the Priorat on your own. Possibility of including optional activities and experiences throughout the day. Charming accommodation in Prades area.

The Cistercian route

The Cistercian Route refers to the area made up of 65 municipalities belonging to the Alt Camp, Conca de Barbera and Urgell regions. In 1989 the tourist brand was created under this name with the aim of boosting tourism in this region, bringing travelers closer to the local natural and cultural heritage. There is an itinerary that can be done on foot or by bicycle that follows the GR175 route, linking the three most important Cistercian monasteries in Catalonia: Poblet, Vallbona and Santes Creus. Crossing the Conca de Barbera and Urgell towards Lleida you can visit the first two.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the monastery of Santa María de Poblet is one of the largest in Europe. With an impressive architectural complex, the monastery houses an important monastic community that makes enudre the spirituality of the place. As for the monastery of Santa María de Vallbona, it is the most important female Cistercian monastery in Catalonia. Built in 1153, the monastery has always been inhabited by nuns and constitutes an architectural ensemble highly representative of Cistercian art with sober and functional spaces.

For those who prefer gastronomy and wines, it is recommended to visit the DO Conca de Barbera wineries and enjoy oleotourism in Las Garrigas, a region in which the Duke of Medinaceli introduced for the first time in Catalonia the variety of Arbequina olives from Palestine in the 18th century.

Nature lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities in the surroundings of Prades. With mountains and forests full of tranquility, the Prades Mountains offer numerous options for active tourism to discover surprising natural corners, hermitages and small towns where time seems to have stopped.

Breakfast in your charming accommodation. Free day at your leisure on the way to Lleida. Possibility of including optional activities and experiences throughout the day. Accommodation in Lleida in a 4 * hotel.

Lleida, the City of the two Cathedrals

With Iberian origins dating back to the 5th century BC, Lérida owes its geographical location to the fertile valley formed by the Segre river that facilitated the survival and settlement of the first people there. Throughout its history, it welcomed different cultures, a fact that is still reflected today in its streets and buildings.

Lleida is the only city in Catalonia with two cathedrals. In 1203 the first one "La Seu Vella" was built. Romanesque in style, although it also has Gothic elements inside, The Seu Vella is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. As a result of the victory of the Bourbon troops in 1907, this cathedral lost its religious character when it became military barracks due to its excellent strategic location at the highest point of the city. Later, Carlos III financed the construction of another Cathedral, known as the Seu Nova, whose neoclassical construction was completed in 1790. Today it is the seat of the Bishopric of Lleida.
