With Iberian origins dating back to the 5th century BC, Lleida owes its geographical location to the fertile valley formed by the Segre river that facilitated the survival and settlement of the first people there. Throughout its history, it welcomed different cultures, a fact that is still reflected today in its streets and buildings.

Lleida is the only city in Catalonia with two cathedrals. In 1203 the first one "La Seu Vella" was built in Romanesque style, although it also has Gothic elements inside, The Seu Vella is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. As a result of the victory of the Bourbon troops in 1907, this cathedral lost its religious character when it became military barracks due to its excellent strategic location at the highest point of the city. Later, Carlos III financed the construction of another Cathedral, known as the " La Seu Nova", whose neoclassical construction was completed in 1790. Today it is the seat of the Bishopric of Lleida.

For Romanesque architecture lovers, the Boí Valley is a real treasure. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the "Romanesque Ensemble of the Boí Valley" is made up of eight churches and a hermitage, which perfectly reflect the peculiarities of Catalan Romanesque art in just a few kilometres. One of its main characteristics is the unity of architectural style. All these churches were built during the 11th and 12th centuries, following the influences of Lombard Romanesque art that favoured functional construction, careful stonework and tall and slender bell towers, whose main functions were surveillance and communication.
