Get to Barcelona on your own. Free day for a first look at Barcelona

FROM BARCELONA TO VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDÈS

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure south towards the famous mountain of Montserrat, known among other things for its jagged appearance and its Benedictine monastery which can be accessed by car, rack railway or cable car. Walkers can also reach the sanctuary on foot from one of the neighbouring towns.

Wine lovers can discover the world of wines and cava (Catalan sparkling wine) from the Penedès, a wine region located 30 minutes south of Barcelona. As the capital of Penedès, Vilafranca del Penedès is considered the capital of wine. A recent study of an archaeological site from the early 7th century B.C. C. has shown that it is in the Penedès where we find the oldest traces of viticulture in Catalonia. It is also one of the high places of the "Castellers", those human towers that we usually see in the Catalan tradition. Between March and October, it is possible to attend the spectacular training sessions of the different "collas" (teams) in the city.

Accommodation in Vilafranca del Penedès in a double room in a 4* hotel (or equivalent rural accommodation depending on availability)

Optional (with supplement):
- Rack railway/cable car tickets
- Entrance to the Sanctuary of Montserrat
- Visit one or several wineries with wine and cava tasting in the Penedès region
- Lunch and dinner

FROM VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDÈS TO TARRAGONA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure to Tarragona and Reus.

Tarragona, formerly known as Tarraco, was one of the main cities of the Iberian Peninsula during the time of the Roman Empire. In the year 2000, UNESCO declared the archaeological site made up of fourteen different places, all of them belonging to the ruins of Roman Tarraco, a World Heritage Site.

Reus, the capital of Baix Camp, is known for being the birthplace of the famous modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. Founded during the Christian Reconquest in 1154, Reus experienced spectacular growth during the 18th century, becoming the second largest city in Catalonia in terms of population, thanks to the development of the textile and alcohol trade. The importance of Reus at that time explains in a certain way the gradual arrival of the bourgeoisie, as evidenced by the numerous modernist buildings that were built in the city between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Today you can enjoy the Modernisme Route, which includes almost 30 places of interest linked to modernist architecture, but also the Gaudí Route, which includes different buildings linked to the history of the famous modernist architect. Finally, you can also take advantage of the Vermouth Route to learn more about the tradition of this liquor in the city of Reus.

Accommodation in Tarragona or Reus in a double room in a 4* hotel.

Optional (with supplement):
- Visit the Vermouth cellar with vermouth tasting
- Guided tour of Reus and/or Tarragona
- Lunch and dinner

FROM TARRAGONA TO TORTOSA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Heading to the south of the province of Tarragona to discover the Ebro Delta and the city of Tortosa.

The Ebro Delta, with an area of approximately 300 km2, is the largest aquatic habitat in Catalonia. Declared a natural park since 1983, it offers a large number of different ecosystems that facilitate the coexistence of a highly diversified fauna and flora. Its extension, as well as its combination of calm waters and rougher waters, make it the ideal place to practice water sports with different levels of difficulty, but also to live unique experiences in the middle of the rice fields and (re)discover ancestral survival techniques in the Ebro Delta or admire the many species of birds that live there.

In addition to offering unique landscapes that change throughout the year, the Ebro Delta has its own gastronomy and culinary tradition, which uses native products from different places in Terres de l'Ebre. Among its ingredients, Km.0, we find rice from the Ebro Delta rice fields, mussels and oysters from the areas of Fangar and Alfacs, but also even more typical products such as blue crab, eel or sea nettles that are delightful, great for the most gourmet palates.

As for Tortosa, it is the capital of the Baix Ebre region. Built about 2,000 years ago, it is today an important agricultural, commercial and industrial centre. Inhabited over the centuries by Iberians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors, it is also known as the City of the Three Cultures. Indeed, after the Christian reconquest of 1148 by Ramón Berenguer IV, the Muslim and Jewish communities were not expelled, thus allowing the Three Cultures to coexist for several centuries. Vestiges of this cultural diversity are still visible today and certainly deserve to be discovered.

Accommodation in Tortosa in a double room in a 4* hotel.

Optional (with supplement):
- Bicycle rental in the Ebro Delta
- Tasting of mussels and oysters in the Bay of Alfacs
- Guided tour of the Delta del Ebro or Tortosa
- Lunch and dinner

FROM TORTOSA TO FALSET

Breakfast at the hotel.

Today you'll discover Terra Alta and Priorat

La Terra Alta  has a name that comes from its detached location and higher above sea level than its neighbors in Baix Ebre and Ribera d'Ebre. It is a true rural paradise that offers a great variety of landscapes. The Terra Alta also has of a Denomination of Origin of wines (DO Terra Alta). The production of white wine predominates, made with white Grenache and Macabeo, but rosé and red wines are also made, mainly with cariñena, red and "peluda" Grenache. With ancient olive trees, vineyards and fields of almond trees, Terra Alta offers unique rural landscapes far from crowds. A paradise to discover by bicycle, traveling the Via Verde de la Val de Zafán or through the many active tourism proposals that exist in the area. La Terra Alta brings together several towns of great interest, such as Batea or Horta de Sant Joan with their medieval streets, or Gandesa and Pinell de Brai with their modernist Wine Cathedrals.

Returning to the banks of the river Ebro, we enter the Ribera d'Ebre to discover the charming town of Miravet and its Templar castle that offers spectacular panoramic views of this area of the Ebro Lands. Considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Tarragona province, Miravet has a medieval historical center ideal to lose yourself in its small streets, although some of its buildings are still in ruins today as a result of the Spanish Civil War. Miravet also has its famous boat crossing, the last river ferry that allows you to cross the Ebro from Miravet to the other shore. Made up of two lutes, this boat attached to two cables works without a motor using only the force of the water and the skill of the boatman. Nature fans can continue to enjoy the Ribera d'Ebre by heading to the Sebes Natural Reserve, which, together with the Meander de Flix, gather an area of free water, river islands and riverside forests covering an area of more than 250 hectares. History lovers can visit the Iberian Village of Castellet de Banyoles, located in the municipality of Tivissa. The Ribera de Ebro is a territory that was built in synergy with the Ebro river and the different surrounding mountain ranges, a fact that is reflected in its landscapes modeled by dry stone margins where olive trees, almond trees and other fruit trees are mostly grown.

As for Priorat, it owes its name to the first Carthusian Monastery built in the entire Iberian Peninsula. The Carthusian monks arrived in this territory in the 12th century thanks to a concession from Alfonso I. For seven centuries and with the aim of populating a recently conquered region, the Provençal monks favoured the development of this territory by spreading the cultivation of vineyards, a territory which currently coincides with the Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin (DOQ Priorat).

Accommodation in Falset in a double room in a 4* hotel (or equivalent rural accommodation).

Optional (with supplement):
- Visit oil mill and tasting of Organic Olive Oil (Terra Alta)
- Visit a modernist winery with wine tasting (Terra Alta)
- Rental of bicycles and materials to travel the Greenway (Terra Alta)
- Visit the winery and wine tasting (Priorat)
- Lunch and dinner

FROM FALSET TO LLEIDA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Crossing the Priorat, Cistercian Route, Lleida.

You can visit the remains of what was once the majestic Carthusian Monastery of Escaladei, which includes three cloisters, the refectory, the church and a faithfully reproduced cell of an ancient monk. For wine lovers, Priorat is a must-see region. Bringing together two different designations of origin (DO Montsant and DOQ Priorat) in its territory, Priorat offers multiple wine tourism experiences with visits to wineries, 4x4 wine routes and different tastings and pairings.

Finally, you cannot visit Priorat without going through the superb town of Siurana, one of the best viewpoints in Spain. This small town of stone houses and cobbled streets was the last bastion of the reconquest in Catalonia, thanks to its unique location and difficult access. Today Siurana is also known worldwide by climbing fans thanks to its legendary cliffs.

The Cistercian Route refers to the territory made up of 65 municipalities belonging to the counties of Alt Camp, Conca de Barberà and Urgell. In 1989, the tourist brand "La Ruta del Císter" was created with the aim of promoting tourism in this region, bringing the traveller closer to the local natural and cultural heritage. There is a feasible route on foot or by bicycle that follows the GR175, linking the three most important Cistercian monasteries in Catalonia: Poblet (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Vallbona and Santes Creus.

For those who prefer gastronomy and wines, it is recommended to visit the DO Conca de Barberà wineries and enjoy oil tourism in Les Garrigues, a region where the Duke of Medinaceli introduced the Arbequina olive variety to Catalonia for the first time. of Palestine in the eighteenth century.

- Oil tourism
- Lunch and dinner

FROM LLEIDA TO CELLERS

Breakfast at the hotel.

Lleida and the Mont-Rebei gorge

Of Iberian origin dating from the 5th century BC. JC, Lleida owes its geographical location to the fertile valley formed by the Segre River, which facilitated the survival and settlement of the first inhabitants. Throughout its history, it has housed different cultures, which is still reflected in its streets and buildings today.

Lleida is the only city in Catalonia that has two cathedrals. In 1203 the first cathedral "La Seu Vella" was built. In Romanesque style, although it also has Gothic elements inside, the Seu Vella is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. After the victory of the Bourbon troops in 1907, this cathedral lost its religious character and was transformed into a military barracks due to its excellent strategic location on the highest point of the city. Later, Carlos III financed the construction of another cathedral, known as La Seu Nova, whose neoclassical construction was completed in 1790. Today it is the seat of the Bishopric of Lleida.

Going towards the Pyrenees, we find the Mont-Rebei gorges, located in the Noguera Ribagorçana-Mont-Rebei partial nature reserve between Aragon and Catalonia. These gorges, formed by the passage of the Noguera Ribagorçana River, offer spectacular views of vertical walls dating back millions of years. It is possible to discover them on foot or by kayak.

Accommodation in Cellers in a double room in a 3* hotel (or equivalent rural accommodation)

Optional (with supplement):
- Kayaking
- Lunch and dinner

FROM CELLERS TO VIELHA

Breakfast at the hotel.

The Catalan Romanesque Art of the Boí Valley and Aïguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

For lovers of Romanesque architecture, the Boí Valley is a treasure in itself. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the "Romanesque Ensemble of the Boí Valley" is made up of eight churches and a hermitage, which perfectly reflect the peculiarities of Catalan Romanesque art in just a few kilometres. One of its main characteristics is the unity of architectural style. All these churches were built during the 11th and 12th centuries, following the influences of Lombard Romanesque art that favoured functional construction, careful stonework and very often had tall, slender bell towers, whose main functions at that time were surveillance and communication.

If you prefer to enjoy the unique nature of the Pyrenees, you can breathe fresh air thanks to a hiking trail in Aïguestortes, which offers different options suitable for all levels. In winter, it will be possible to enjoy a ski descent at the Boí-Taüll ski resort, the highest ski resort in the entire Catalan Pyrenees.

Direction Vielha to go from the Boí Valley to the Aran Valley. With an area of 620 km2 and almost 30% of its territory above 2,000 meters, the Aran Valley is almost a small country in itself. Surrounded by high mountains, and having for many centuries only the Garonne as a gateway to the rest of the world, this region has a certain Occitan influence, an element that can be found in its official language, Aranese, which is only spoken in this valley.

With many typical towns such as Arties or Bagergue, in addition to its capital VielLa, the Arán Valley is a unique place with its own culture and gastronomy.

Accommodation in Aran Valley in a double room in a 4* hotel

Optional (with supplement):
- Visit one or several churches of the "Romanesque Ensemble of the Boí Valley"
- Ski passes
- Lunch and dinner

FROM VIELHA TO LA SEU D'URGELL

Breakfast at the hotel.

From Vielha to La Seu d'Urgell.

Before leaving the Aran Valley you can enjoy a horseback ride or a walk in summer, or a snowshoeing, dog sledging or snowmobiles ride according to your preferences.

After crossing the Col de la Bonaigua we will descend to Pallars Sobirà, a mecca for lovers of rafting and canoeing, before passing through its capital, Sort, the former capital of the Pallars region. Sort means "luck" in Catalan and in fact this city has also become famous thanks to its "luck". Precisely the winning ticket of the special draw carried out by the Spanish National Lottery each year was sold three times in this small town of fewer than 2,500 inhabitants. Will you try this year?

Thenlets's go to La Seu d'Urgell, the capital of the Alt Urgell region. Located in the Urgellet plain, between the Segre and Valira rivers, and dominated by the Sierra del Cadí, this town borders the Principality of Andorra, Baridà and Pallars Sobirà. La Seu d'Urgell and its surroundings are especially known for the importance of their primary sector, especially in the dairy and cheese industry. Cheese lovers can delight their palates by visiting an artisanal cheese factory in the region. With origins prior to Roman times, La Seu d'Urgell also offers some cultural options, such as its Romanesque-style Sant María cathedral dating from the 12th century and the medieval streets that run through the historic centre.

Accommodation in La Seu d'Urgell and surrounding towns in a double room in a 4* hotel

Optional (with supplement):
- Guided excursion on horseback or on foot (Valle de Arán)
- Mentioned winter activities (snowshoeing, dog sledging, snowmobiling)
- Rafting and canoeing (Pallars Sobirà)
- Visit the cheese factory with a tasting
- Lunch and dinner

FROM LA SEU D'URGELL TO LA GARROTXA

Breakfast at the hotel.

We leave the Pyrenees to go to La Garrotxa, but not before taking advantage of the charm of the small towns of La Cerdanya, a Catalan region located in the heart of one of the most beautiful Catalan valleys. According to the Catalan writer Josep Pla "La Cerdanya is one of the most beautiful departments in Catalonia. It is a large valley, structured on the course of the Segre, with the curious peculiarity of falling slightly, gently, from east to west, on an inclined plane It is not a large steep valley, but a sloping valley Surrounded by high mountains that border three thousand meters, Cerdanya is not depressing, like so many places in the Pyrenees, on the contrary, it produces a sensation of spaciousness, elevation, luminosity, freedom. Its skies are splendid, its air is fine, its landscapes of great tenderness". Its geographical peculiarity makes it the ideal place to enjoy a hot air balloon flight early in the morning, during which you can admire the beauty of this Catalan valley.

Then head to La Garrotxa, where you can find the most characteristic volcanic landscape of the Iberian Peninsula, the La Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park with around forty volcanic cones and more than twenty lava flows. The orography, the soil and the climate are at the origin of varied vegetation, often exuberant with forests of oaks, common oaks and beech forests of exceptional landscape value. A total of eleven municipalities are attached to this volcanic area, including Castellfollit de la Roca, a small town perched on more than 50 meters of basalt cliff for a kilometre.

Accommodation in Olot and surroundings in a double room in a 4* hotel or equivalent rural accommodation.

Optional (with supplement):
- Hot air balloon flight (Cerdanya)
- Optional activities in La Garrotxa
- Lunch and dinner

FROM LA GARROTXA TO FIGUERES

Breakfast at the hotel.

Garrotxa - Cap Creus - Figueres

Today you will definitively leave the Pyrenees to reach the Costa Brava, and more specifically Cap Creus, considered the largest uninhabited area of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. This large desert allows you to practice many outdoor activities, such as hiking or cycling. Cap Creus is also very popular among divers thanks to a still virgin coastline, a mixture of small coves and steep cliffs, and transparent waters that facilitate the admiration of an important representation of the Mediterranean fauna and flora.

At the end of this haven of peace, is the small town of Cadaquès, isolated for a long time from the rest of the world, only facing the sea, which explains its important fishing culture, which is found in its gastronomy. Also, many painters and writers were attracted by the charm and beauty of this town and its wild nature. Among them, Salvador Dalí decided to establish his permanent residence there and made Cadaqués famous throughout the world by immortalizing it in most of his paintings. Today it is possible to visit his house in Port Lligat.

Wine lovers can also continue to discover Catalan wines by tasting wines from an Empordà winery on the way to Figueres.

Back in Figueres, you can deepen your knowledge of Dalí and his surrealist universe by visiting the Teatre-Mueseu Dalí. Considered Dalí's last great work, everything has been designed and thought out by the artist to allow the visitor to immerse himself in his fascinating universe.

Finally, the centre of Figueres offers a large open-air commercial space that extends through the historic streets of the city. It is the ideal place to take a walk in the late afternoon and discover the old church of San Pedro and other buildings of interest, or simply to better feel the atmosphere of Figueres.

Accommodation in Figueres in a double room in a 4* hotel

Optional (with supplement):
- Excursion, bike rental, diving, boat ride (Cadaquès)
- Visit the House of Salvador Dalí (Port-Lligat - Cadaqués)
- Visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Figueres)
- Visit the winery with a tasting
- Lunch and dinner

FROM FIGUERES TO GIRONA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Figueres - Empordà - Girona

In the direction of Girona, you will have the opportunity to discover the rich historical heritage of the Empordà. The ruins of Empuries are the only archaeological site in the entire Iberian Peninsula where traces of Greek and Roman origin are found in the same place. For those who prefer medieval times, there are many towns that testify to this time through their streets and stone buildings. We can mention in particular the towns of Peratallada and Pals, which are considered two of the most beautiful towns on the Costa Brava.

Ceramic lovers can discover the entire ceramic tradition of Bisbal d'Empordà by visiting a ceramics workshop or doing some shopping.

For those who prefer food and wine, there are many options in the area. From anchovies from l'Escala to prawns from Palamós, passing through wines from the DO Empordà or Catalan cider, the offer is endless! It is possible to participate in different experiences, show-cookings and/or guided tours to discover local flavours in person.

Along the way, we recommend that you make a stop in Calella de Palafrugell, an old fishing village that has preserved all the charm of yesteryear.

Arrival in Girona considered one of the leading cities in Spain in terms of quality of life. After being besieged thirteen times between 1295 and 1809, and after having repelled Napoleon's troops three times, Girona is a city that is steeped in history and full of charm thanks to its historic centre and its many medieval buildings, as well as numerous Roman, Arab and Jewish remains.

Optional (with supplement):
- Visit the cider house with a tasting
- Visit the winery with a tasting
- Ceramic workshop
- Culinary experiences and tastings in Palamós and l'Escala
- Girona Tour

FROM GIRONA TO BARCELONA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Girona - Maresme - Barcelona

Penultimate day of the Grand Tour of Catalonia. You will have two options to get to the Catalan capital: following the coast, or passing through the Montseny Massif and Vic.

The Maresme coast offers different fishing villages, which have developed due to their proximity to Barcelona. The construction of the first railway line in Spain is a big reason why many Barcelonans have chosen this coast as a vacation spot. Modernist buildings built mainly between 1880 and 1930 can also be admired in many coastal towns.

Wine lovers can complete the Catalan wine route by visiting a DO Alella winery with a tasting. This Designation of Origin is one of the oldest in the entire Iberian Peninsula, despite having a small area of only 223 hectares. Finally, archaeology fans can go to Badalona to visit the Roman city of Baetulo, which existed between the 1st century B.C. and the 6th century AD.

For those who prefer the mountains and gastronomy, we advise you to go to Vic, famous above all for its high-quality charcuterie. It is possible to take a city tour with an audio guide. Back in Barcelona, it is possible to make a stop in the heart of the Montseny Natural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1978. Visit it on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, with or without a guide. You can also enjoy the different viewpoints of the park if you travel by car.
